This rug is a unique & incredible item made of natural sheep wool only in the region of the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine. We call it lizhnyk. The texture of the rug can’t be repeated, because of its handmade nature, it is handwoven with a special wooden loom. It can be used as a rug, carpet, or picnic blanket Basic information Dimensions: see above Material: Carpathian sheep wool Weight: 7-20 lb (3-9 kg) How it is made (see a video in the about section): To make one medium-sized rug you had to work long & hard. I use only natural wool from sheep that were raised in the high Carpathian mountain pastures, & natural dyes. At first you have to wash & dry the wool thoroughly, the comb it with a special tool, which makes the wool puff up & resemble a cloud. The combed wool is easily manipulated & made into threads, which are then used to make a lizhnyk on a loom (handmade looms are mostly used in the mountains). The woven product is then placed in a special device - called ‘valylo’, a huge wooden barrel, narrowed down to the bottom. Water is then piped in with great force. The flow of water rapidly rises, creating a whirlpool in which the blankets spin for hours. After this process lizhnyks become tight & fluffy. Recommended care: Instead of wasting your time, give your item a nice vigorous shake, & most of the stuff stuck to it will come off :) If you accidentally spilled something like coffee or wine on it, run that area of the item under cold water. Once the stain has been washed out give it a gentle squeeze. Afterward, put the item on a surface where it’s going to get a lot of air & make sure to flip it periodically until it dries. For the rugs, you can use a vacuum cleaner. in case the item is quite dirty, please use dry clean.
