On the beach, I was busy photographing sets of waves, the local surfers, breaking waves nearly reaching the tops of low lava cliffs, when I caught sight of this young man, standing waist high in the churning surf, absolutely motionless in the face of a towering wave about to break over him. . . . I have to admit that I wavered between naming this photo No Fear, or Idiocy; I settled on No Fear.
