This beautiful vintage pen & ink image of a Dromedary/Camel come from The Picture Natural History with about four hundred illustrations by Mary E.C. Boutell, edited with an introduction by her father the Rev Charles Boutell, M.A. Published in 1874. My copy of the book was quite foxed & falling apart with insect damage throughout. Amazingly most of the illustrations were still in good condition. Scanning & preserving these wonderful illustrations seemed a terrific way to keep them alive. The pictures are very detailed although it does not seem to come through in the photographs Any of these Boutell Animal & Critter images can be mixed & matched. Boutell The Dromedary: The best breed of camels are the Dromedaries. They are smaller than the Arabian camels , & can do more work. They have two humps, & are fund in Central Asia, Thibet, & China. The feet of both Camels & Dromedaries are exactly suited for walking on the loose sand of the deserts, having large elastic pads which spread out when the foot touches the ground; & so these creatures are well called The ships of the desert. The Dromedary always kneels down to be loaded or to rest itself, & has on its chest & the joints of its legs thick & hard lumps, which protect it from injury. Dromedaries do not like going up or down hill: but on the flat ground of their native deserts they got on & on with wonderful 3endurance. At night, when the Arabs are sitting around their fire, the Dromedaries may be see kneeling behind them, with their long necks stretched out to get a taste of the heat, which small indulgence of their patient hardworking life most certainly deserve Dromedary/Camel 1 Inch Pinback Button Vintage Image
