Delightful Antique 19th Century Chinese Ceramic Pounce or Pepper Pot with Transfer Printed Design & Hand Finished Blue Glaze Whatever the regional use, this is a nice piece. The transfer is crisp & well defined & the blue glaze looks good. The debate is whether this is a pounce pot used for blotting ink, or a pepper pot, muffin ever or sugar shaker. This piece stands 3 1/4 high & is 2 across the base, weighing 96 grams. The cork is missing, there are 16 holes in the top. Blotting sand & pounce are not the same thing, but most, though not all, of the sanders or pounce pots (I believe that they were probably used for whichever substance the user chose) that I’ve seen in silver & pewter inkstands were low & wide, in the same proportions as the inkwell, & the majority did have a concave top. Sugar casters or muffineers, which often held cinnamon or a mix of sugar & cinnamon are usually largish pieces with tall fancily pierced tops.
