18TH CENTURY PEWTER VESSEL An 18th Century pewter commode liner referred to as the ‘Welsh Hat’ style. This example appears to have had an additional usage as a wine cooler, probably shortly after manufacture. The rim is stamped: WINE & 1764 on opposing sides. The body has three bands of incised lines around the circumference. The National Trust have one in their collection (998539) at Sizergh Castle, Cumbria, which is also described as a wine cooler / commode liner & has three sets of incised line too. The vessel is not quite water-tight; so would require some sort of internal liner, or stood on a tray if it were to be filled with ice, but it could also potentially be used as planter with an internal pot on a tray. Date: 18th Century. 1764 or earlier. Condition: Fair condition. Left in uncleaned condition. The vessel has had a bead of weld on the underside of the rim to help secure some splits. The plinth has had some spot welds presumably to re-attach it. There is a crease in the lower part of the body which although is not visibly holed, water does seep through. There are some small holes in the rim flange. There is a layer of cement-like material in the base. Dimensions: Diameter of outer rim: 29.5 cm (11-5/8) Aperture at top: 22 cm (8-5/8) approx Internal diameter of base: 14.3 cm (5-5/8) Height: 20.4 cm (8) max Weight: 2490 g Stock number: AC1678 Link back to the shop for more beautiful treasures: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/ShopAntico If you wish to purchase more than one item, I will refund you any excess shipping costs which may be incurred after you’ve paid.
