This stunning antique cluster ring was made in France & dates to the late 19th century. in the centre rests a natural carbuncle garnet in an open back grain setting, with an approximate weight of 2.7 carats, encircled & flanked by 18 rose cut diamonds in cutdown silver settings. The ring also has a decorative pierced gallery in the form of crescents & a solid semi-circular shank. The garnet is a particularly ‘juicy’ specimen & absorbs light beautifully. The carbuncle garnet has a long & interesting history, in was mentioned in The Bible & is said to protect the wearer by the power of the flame! The diamonds are rose cut & the triangular facets of these cuts were very popular during the Georgian & Victorian periods as they glistened more beautifully in candlelight than any other cut. UK size M 1/4, approx. US size 6, 3.86g, bezel measures 15mm x 12mm. The ring is in excellent condition considering it’s age, the stones are set securely but the prongs could be tightened by a local jeweller if desired as there is a faint rattling sound when shaken.
