Vintage 1960s Bakelite SMITHS Floating Balance 8 Day Clock - Serviced - Working - British Rail Model? This clock dates post 1960 when Smiths introduced their own floating balance movement this can be identified by having the turn screw regulator adjustment. The face has a tiny plate which looks rather British Railways in shape it has the inscription 21B/116 an internet search gained no results & I have no idea what it represents. But continued research indicated 21B could represent the works sheds possibly at Saltney near Chester & the 116 could represent a diesel class train introduced in 1958 - I can’’t prove any of this but it seems too much of a coincidence not to mean something similar? The chapter ring in a cream shade & lovely Art Deco gold coloured hands & Arabic numerals is marked MADE in GREAT BRITAIN. The bakelite back cover is also marked thus & SMITHS 8 DAY FLOATING BALANCE. Bought as a non runner a light clean & new synthetic oil had good results. It keeps time but only runs for 7 days not 8, maybe it will improve with time. The case was lightly polished & could be polished further. The bakelite has a few light scratches, mostly on the right hand side - last photo. The face is very clean but has minor dust within. The bezel has a dark tone. It needs a light shake to get it running which is normal with floating balances. Just under 19cms in height. 19cms in width. 8cms in depth. The face including the bezel is 16cms in diameter. It weighs just under 1kg. This will be dispatched Royal Mail 2nd Class Signed For 5.50 - please note we don’t ship outside of the U.K. 1960S Bakelite Smiths Floating Balance 8 Day Clock - Serviced British Rail?
